Long vowels
IGH words
In igh, the gh is silent and the i says its name. Most igh words end in -ight, which makes this one of the friendliest word families to practice.

How the pattern works
The three letters igh work together to spell long i. The g and h are silent.
Once a child can spell light, they can spell most of the family by changing the first letter or blend: night, right, bright, flight.
Common mistakes
- Writing ite for ight: “lite,” “brite.” Lite appears on product labels, which makes this mistake common.
- Leaving out the g or the h: “nite,” “liht.”
- Mixing up homophones: right/write, night/knight, sight/site.
Practice ideas
- Write -ight on a card and change only the beginning: l, n, r, s, m, t, br, fl, fr.
- Practice right and write together, with a sentence for each.
