Look, say, cover, write, check
Look. Say. Cover.
Write. Check.
A classic spelling routine that asks a child to spell from memory, not just copy. Make a sheet from your own list in seconds.

02 / A little practice
Your words. Ready to go.
Add a sentence for each word (optional)
Practice reads the word, your sentence, then the word again, just like a spelling test. Keep sentences short and leave out names and personal details.
Up to three spelling patterns, separated by commas. Leave blank to let the child or a grown-up write them.
Each sheet includes a QR link back to these words. Word search supports up to 20 words with 2–14 letters.
How it works
- 01
Look and say
Read the word aloud and notice anything tricky: a double letter, a silent letter, a vowel team.
- 02
Cover and write
Fold the paper or cover the word, then write it from memory.
- 03
Check and try again
Uncover the word and compare letter by letter. Fix any mistakes, then use the second column for another try.
Why covering the word matters
Copying a word while looking at it is easy and feels productive, but it does not ask the brain to retrieve the spelling. Covering the word turns each try into a small memory test, and recalling a word is what strengthens it.
The check step matters just as much. Comparing the attempt with the correct spelling and fixing it means the last version the child sees and writes is the right one.
Tips
- Have your child say the letters aloud while writing, or tap out the sounds first.
- Do a few words a day rather than the whole list at once.
- Come back to words that needed a second try the next day.
Questions grown-ups ask
- Is this the same as “look, cover, write, check”?
- Yes. Some schools add “say” as a separate step. The worksheet works either way.
- How many words fit on a page?
- Ten. A 20-word list prints on two pages.
