Long vowels
EE and EA words
Ee and ea are the two most common spellings of long e. Many pairs sound the same but mean different things (see/sea, meet/meat), so practice with sentences helps.

How the pattern works
Both ee and ea say long e, and there is no reliable rule for choosing between them. That makes these words good candidates for spaced practice.
Ea can also say short e (head, bread). Keeping those words in their own group stops them from muddling the long e list.
Homophones are common here: see/sea, meet/meat, week/weak, feet/feat, peek/peak.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong team: “tre” or “trea” for tree, “meet” for meat.
- Writing e alone: “gren,” “slep.”
- Writing short-e ea words with e: “hed,” “bred.”
Practice ideas
- Say homophones in sentences: “I see the sea.”
- Group the ee and ea words, then have your child highlight the vowel team in each one.
