How the pattern works
Ai usually comes in the middle of a word or syllable, followed by a consonant: rain, paint, wait.
Ay usually comes at the end of a word or syllable: day, play, crayon (cray-on).
Long a can also be spelled a_e (cake). When a word could be spelled more than one way, that is the moment to practice it from memory.
Common mistakes
- Using ay in the middle of a word: “rayn.”
- Using ai at the end: “plai.”
- Choosing a_e instead of ai: “trane” for train. Sound-alike spellings like this are the main reason these words need practice.
Practice ideas
- Ask: “Is the sound at the end?” If yes, try ay.
- Sort the words into ai, ay and a_e, then write one sentence using one word from each group.
