How the pattern works
Oa usually comes in the middle of a word: boat, road, soap.
Ow usually comes at the end of a word or syllable: snow, yellow, window. Ow can also say /ou/ as in cow, so read each word aloud before sorting.
In -old and -ost words, the o says its name on its own: cold, most.
Common mistakes
- Using ow in the middle: “bowt” for boat.
- Using oa at the end: “snoa.”
- Choosing o_e instead of oa: “bote,” “rode” for road (rode is a real word with another meaning).
Practice ideas
- Sort long o words by spelling: oa, ow, o_e, -old.
- Read road and rode, then use each in a sentence.
