How the pattern works

Short e says /ĕ/ as in bed. It appears in closed syllables, with a consonant after the vowel.

Short e is also spelled ea in a handful of common words (head, bread, ready). Practice those separately once the e spelling is secure, because they look like long e words.

Common mistakes

  • Writing i for e (pin for pen). In many accents the two sound close before m and n, so say the word slowly and watch your mouth in a mirror.
  • Writing a for e (bad for bed), especially for children who also speak Spanish, where e and a map to different sounds.
  • Forgetting the second letter in -ll, -ss and -ck endings: spell, dress, check.

Practice ideas

  • Say pairs and have your child point to the one with short e: pen or pin, bed or bad, ten or tin.
  • Build a word ladder: bed → red → rest → nest → net.
