How the pattern works
In a short a word, the a sits between consonants in a closed syllable, so it says /ă/ as in cat. The simplest pattern is consonant–vowel–consonant (CVC): c-a-t.
Once CVC words are easy, add blends at the start or end (flag, camp). Each extra consonant is a separate sound, so stretching the word out slowly helps a child hear every letter.
Common mistakes
- Mixing short a and short e (pan and pen). Say the word slowly and exaggerate the vowel.
- Leaving out a sound in a blend: “fag” for flag or “sap” for snap.
- Using k at the start of a word. Before a, the /k/ sound is spelled with c: cat, can, cap.
Practice ideas
- Change one letter at a time: cat → hat → ham → jam.
- Sort the words by their endings: -at, -ap, -an, -ag.
