How the pattern works

Or says /or/ as in fork. At the end of a word, the same sound is often spelled ore: more, store, before.

Other spellings of this sound (door, four, board) come later and are best learned as separate words.

Forty is spelled without the u that appears in four, and it often causes mistakes even for adults.

Common mistakes

  • Writing ore in the middle of a word: “forek.”
  • Writing or at the end where ore belongs: “stor.”
  • Writing four-style spellings: “fourty” for forty.

Practice ideas

  • Sort or and ore by position: middle or end.
  • Read word pairs that differ by an e: for/fore, or/ore, then talk about their meanings.
