Vowels with r
AR words
When r follows a vowel, it changes the vowel’s sound. Ar is the most predictable of these “bossy r” patterns, so it is usually taught first.

How the pattern works
Ar says /ar/ as in car. The a is neither short nor long; the r controls it.
Ar sounds the same at the start, middle and end of a word, which makes it a reliable pattern to practice.
Common mistakes
- Writing r alone: “cr,” “strt.”
- Writing or for ar after w: “warm” and “war” really are spelled with ar, even though they sound like or.
- Leaving out r in words like park or farm, in accents where r is soft.
Practice ideas
- Build words with ar in the middle: c + ar + d, p + ar + k.
- Sort one-syllable and two-syllable ar words.
