Consonant teams and blends
DGE and GE words
No English word ends with the letter j. The /j/ sound at the end of a word is spelled -dge or -ge, and the vowel before it tells you which.

dge after a short vowel
10 words- badge

- ridge
- nudge
ge after a long vowel or consonant
10 words- cage
- page

How the pattern works
Use -dge right after a single short vowel: badge, edge, bridge, judge. Like tch, the extra letter protects the short vowel.
Use -ge after a long vowel (cage, huge) or after a consonant (large, change, sponge).
Common mistakes
- Writing j at the end: “bridj.”
- Using -ge after a short vowel: “bage” for badge (which reads as a long a).
- Using -dge after a consonant: “lardge.”
Practice ideas
- Compare pairs that differ only in the vowel sound: badge and page, ridge and huge.
- Pair this list with tch words; the rule works the same way.
