How the pattern works
Use ck right after a single short vowel at the end of a syllable: back, neck, pocket.
Use k after a consonant (milk, desk, bank), after a long vowel with silent e (cake, bike), or after a vowel team (look, seek).
Ck never starts a word.
Common mistakes
- Writing only c or only k after a short vowel: “bac” or “bak” for back.
- Adding ck after a consonant: “milck.”
- Using ck after a long vowel: “cacke” for cake.
Practice ideas
- Ask two questions: “Is the vowel short? Is it right before the /k/?” Two yeses means ck.
- Sort the words into ck and k, then explain each choice.
