How the pattern works
Put your tongue between your teeth and blow: that is the quiet th in thin. Turn your voice on and it becomes the buzzy th in this. Touching your throat lets a child feel the difference.
Either way, the spelling is the same two letters, t and h.
Common mistakes
- Writing f for th (“fink” for think) or v for th, which matches how many young children say these words.
- Writing d for th in words like this, that and them (“dis”).
- Spanish-speaking children may write t or d for th because Spanish does not use this sound in the same way.
Practice ideas
- Hand on throat: read each word and decide whether th is quiet or buzzy.
- Spell with/both/bath and notice th at the end.
