How the pattern works
Oi comes in the middle of a word or syllable, usually before a consonant: coin, point, noise.
Oy comes at the end of a word or syllable: boy, enjoy, roy-al, oys-ter.
English words do not end in i, so the y spelling takes over at the end.
Common mistakes
- Using oy in the middle: “coyn.”
- Using oi at the end: “boi.”
- Leaving off the silent e in noise, voice and choice.
Practice ideas
- Put oi and oy on two cards. As you say each word, your child points to the spelling it needs.
- Compare the same rule in ai/ay and ou/ow.
